It was 3:30 in the morning when our alarm went off in the hotel room.

It was the summer of 2020, and we had managed to squeeze in a roadtrip down south to Eilat between Covid lockdowns. This was my first time making the 5-hour drive to this popular vacation city at the southernmost tip of Israel on the Red Sea - and we had signed up for a sunrise hike in the desert of Timna Park.

By 4:30am, we were driving away from the hotel, the sky still dark and star-studded above us - but the midnight-black above faded to a light purple haze in a line above the mountains, hinting at the coming dawn. We could barely see our boots as we laced them up in the gravel lot of the meeting point at the park.

But before long - it was all worth it. As we scrambling up metal rungs drilled into the rocky cliffs, the dark sky thawed and brightened, the stars winked out one by one, and then finally we watched the hot gold sunlight spill over the distant mountains, illuminated the rose gold sands and stone arches all around us.

After the guided tour (which included an underground tunnel that used to be an ancient copper mine), Ido and I continued to hike in the park with our friends until the desert heat became unbearable ... which was about 10 a.m. 🥵

These were the colors we saw as we watched the light bloom and change on the desert colors of Timna Park.
